The Bottle Rack
A vintage French zinc bottle drying rack, circular and freestanding, the zinc gone soft grey with age. It stands square and steady on its own, in good condition throughout, with the surface wear of a long working life in a cellar.
The égouttoir was standard equipment in the French cellar, where washed bottles were upended over its spikes to drain. Marcel Duchamp chose one in 1914, set it on a pedestal and called it sculpture, and the form has been read that way ever since — though this one spent its life in Provence, where it was found, doing the work it was made for.
It holds dried stems and branches well, and stands as sculpture on a floor or a wide shelf.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
