The Fleur Bleue Torchon
An unused French kitchen torchon in toile métis — linen and cotton woven together — with fine red stripes down each long side and a cotton hanging loop at one end.
The selvedge still carries its printed blue mark: TOILE MÉTIS · “Fleur Bleue” · 127. Fleur Bleue was the quality stamp French mills printed on metis household cloth, a guarantee of a true linen-and-cotton weave. It was meant to wash away with the first launderings — the fact that it is still crisp and legible means this piece was never used.
Maker: mill unmarked beyond the Fleur Bleue quality stamp
Origin: France
Era: mid-20th century, c. 1935–1965
Material: toile metis (linen and cotton), unwashed original finish
Condition: excellent, unused — crisp hand, original factory fold lines, a few very faint pale storage marks. Hems and loop intact.
Measurements: 75 × 58 cm / 29.5 × 22.8 in
Wash it and it becomes an everyday cloth. Leave it folded and the mark stays.
