The Horse Handle Jug

€35,00
SKU — TB107

A Staffordshire relief jug under a deep treacle glaze, dating from circa 1930 to 1950, with a horse's head modelled at the top of the handle and its neck arching down the side. Hunting figures run around the belly beneath a band of leaves and rosettes, the glaze pooling dark in the modelling and lifting to warm amber where the relief stands proud. Marked QUALITY / ARTHUR WOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND to the underside. The glaze is whole and unbroken, the relief crisp, the handle firm.

The horse-handled hunt jug was among the most copied forms of the nineteenth century, and Arthur Wood & Son of Longport kept the model in production well into the twentieth.

Handsome on a dresser shelf, and generous enough for branches in autumn.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
Approx. overall 8¼" high x 7¾" wide x 4" deep
Approx. overall 21cm high x 20cm wide x 10cm deep
