The Blue Frieze Jug

€39,00
SKU — TB108

A Staffordshire relief jug in a deep even blue, dating from circa 1920 to 1940, with a small mask crowning the handle and a band of figures in historic dress running around the belly. The glaze gathers darker in the modelling so the frieze reads clearly from across a room; it is the colour that makes this one. Impressed MADE IN ENGLAND and WOOD to the underside, for the Wood potteries of Burslem. Glaze whole and even, relief crisp, handle firm.

Blue relief jugs of this kind were made between the wars in the older Staffordshire manner.

A single strong colour in a pale kitchen, and a good jug for a handful of stems.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
Approx. overall 6¼" high x 7½" wide x 3½" deep
Approx. overall 16cm high x 19cm wide x 9cm deep
