The Pair of Cream Jugs

SOLD AS A PAIR. THE JUGS ARE NOT AVAILABLE SEPARATELY.

Two small English cream jugs, both dating from the earlier and middle decades of the twentieth century and both around 11 cm high. The first is printed in blue with a floral spray over a moulded hexagonal body, marked CROWN DEVON, FIELDINGS, STAFFORDSHIRE to the base, and carries a fine even crazing with warm staining settled into it. The second is white ironstone with a softly waved, drapery-moulded rim, printed ROYAL CROWNFORD IRONSTONE BY ARTHUR WOOD ENGLAND, clean and bright. Both are sound, with no chips or cracks.

Jugs of this size held cream at the breakfast table and were never bought in pairs — they were gathered one at a time, which is how they read together now.

Charming grouped on a shelf or a windowsill, and good for cuttings or a few short stems.
