Folded cream metis linen torchon with woven red stripes and a white cotton hanging loop, resting on a linen cloth

The Red Stripe Torchons, Pair

SKU — LN1

A pair of heavy French kitchen torchons in creamy metis cloth — linen and cotton woven together — with a band of woven red stripes down each long side. Unusually, each one has a cotton hanging loop at both ends, so they can hang from either edge.

Two matching cloths of this weight are harder to come by than one. Metis was the workhorse cloth of the French kitchen, woven to be washed a thousand times, and it softens without ever going thin.

Maker: unmarked
Origin: France
Era: mid-20th century, c. 1930–1960
Material: metis linen (linen and cotton), machine-hemmed, cotton tape loops

Condition: good, honestly used — soft and well washed. One of the two carries a few faint pale patches toward one end. All hems and loops intact on both.

Measurements (each): 75 × 58 cm / 29.5 × 22.8 in

Sold as a pair of two.

Good on the rail, over the back of a chair, or folded away in a linen cupboard.
