The Ribbed Green Jug

A ribbed jug under a soft olive green glaze, dating from the middle of the twentieth century, the barrel-shaped body cut with close vertical ribs and finished with a short spout and a broad strap handle. The glaze gathers darker in the ribbing and lifts on the ridges, which gives an undecorated piece real graphic depth. Three stilt marks in the fully glazed base show it was fired standing on supports.

Unmarked, as much European kitchen ware of the period was, and none the worse for it — the colour is the whole argument here.

Handsome on open shelving, and good for a loose bunch of garden flowers.
