The Rooster Jug

A rooster-form pitcher in white glazed earthenware, dating from the second half of the twentieth century, the bird standing upright with its open beak forming the spout and its sweeping tail the handle. The plumage is modelled in crisp relief and left white throughout, with only the comb, wattles and beak picked out in red and yellow — a restraint that keeps the piece graphic rather than folksy. Unmarked to the base. The glaze is whole and bright with no chips or cracks.

Figural rooster jugs belong to a long European table tradition, made in France, Portugal and Italy alike for the farmhouse breakfast table.

Beautifully placed among other rooster and hen pieces on a dresser, where it holds its own as a single strong shape.
