The Trier Basket Tray
A large oval basket tray in woven willow, deep enough to carry as well as to hold. The sides are worked in a close weave between two heavy plaited bands — one at the rim, one at the foot — and the base is a rigid fibreboard panel stitched in with a plaited edge.
The underside is stamped in a rectangular frame: “…werkstatt / TRIER”. The top line has faded past reading, but the piece is German, from a workshop in Trier in the Rhineland — found just over the border in Sarreguemines, in French Lorraine, where German and French country goods have crossed for generations.
Inside, a red-and-white polka dot oilcloth is glued to the base. It lifts out with a little patience if you would rather see plain board.
