The Resin Pots of the Pine Forest

PRICE IS PER POT. CHOOSE A, B, C OR D — EACH LETTER IS MARKED ON ITS OWN PHOTOS.

Antique French resin pots, late nineteenth century, wheel-thrown in unglazed terracotta with a flared rim and a narrow foot. Each still carries a thick, glossy crust of hardened pine resin inside and long dark runs down the outer wall, laid down over seasons on the tree. Pot A is pale sand streaked with dark resin; B is ochre and speckled; C is silver-grey washed with rust and black; D is warm salmon-pink with amber resin spots and carries a fine line from the rim down the wall, which does not affect its character as a display piece.

In the pine forests of south-western France, pots like these were fixed to the trunk beneath a cut in the bark to catch the sap, which was distilled into turpentine and rosin. They were made by the thousand and used until they wore out.

They sit beautifully on a windowsill or open shelving, holding dried stems or simply on their own.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
Approx. 4⅜" high x 5⅞" diameter at the rim
Approx. 11cm high x 15cm diameter at the rim
