The Wicker Dame Jeanne
A vintage dame jeanne, likely from the first half to the middle of the twentieth century, in green glass entirely clad in hand-woven wicker. Broad flat splints are basket-woven over the shoulder and neck, a tighter round-cane weave covers the body down to a twisted foot ring, and a heavy twisted rope handle rises to a plaited collar at the neck, where the old cork still sits. The wicker has darkened to an even warm brown, with paler patches where the surface has worn back to the bare cane, giving it a wonderfully timeworn character.
Across southern Europe, bottles like this carried and stored wine and spirits, the wicker protecting the glass on the cart and in the cellar.
Generous in scale, it stands beautifully on the floor beside a hearth or on a dresser, with a few dried branches in the neck.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
