The Zinnia Bouquet
A French flower still life in oil on canvas board, signed R. Brisach and dated 1946 by the painter's own hand. A full bouquet of zinnias and dahlias — white, coral, orange, deep red and dusky rose — stands in a round dark-red vase on a green table against a grey-green ground. The paint is thin and dry, the weave of the board reading through it, and the surface has settled to a soft matt. The painted image is intact throughout, with light rubbing along the outermost edges of the board where a frame would cover it.
Dated flower pieces of this kind were painted in quantity in provincial France in the years just after the war. That the artist set a year beside the signature is what makes this one datable rather than simply old.
It comes unframed, which suits the way small oils are used now — leaned on a chest of drawers, a shelf edge, or above a row of books.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
