The Swedish Farmstead
A Swedish farmstead landscape in oil on board, painted between the 1940s and the 1970s and signed S. Stenmark in the lower right. A long whitewashed half-timbered range under thick thatch runs into the picture, a red cottage behind it, three hens on the cart track, and a reed-fringed pond with haystacks on the plain beyond. Thick paint stands in the thatch and the stacks, thinner in a high grey-blue sky. Painting and frame are both sound, the gilding evenly worn along the outer edge to a quiet, dry gold.
Half-timbering under thatch belongs to the far south of Sweden, and the picture stands in a long line of Swedish national-romantic landscape painting. A framer's stamp on the reverse reads Glasmästeri & Inramning, B. Månsson, Östra Förstadsgatan 52, Malmö, placing the framing in the same province as the motif.
The moulded frame, grey-green with gilt inner and outer edges, hangs ready on its original cord.
