The Järvsö Trough
An antique Swedish dough trough, likely nineteenth to early twentieth century, hollowed by hand from a single piece of wood and worn to a scrubbed honey patina, with raised handles lifted at each end. An old inked owner's mark survives underneath. Small age cracks are present, sympathetic to a piece that spent its working life in a farmhouse, and it remains sound throughout.
Troughs like this belong to Swedish allmoge — the folk tradition of the farms, where things were made by hand for the household rather than by a named workshop. This one is unsigned, comes from Järvsö in Hälsingland, and dough was kneaded and left to rise in it.
Its length and low sculptural form read beautifully down the centre of a table or along open shelving, holding dried stems or standing empty.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
