The French Belle Époque Ménagère

An antique French ménagère, or table cruet stand, in cast metal of about 1880 to 1910, worked in the Louis XV manner with deep acanthus scrollwork at the base, C-curves and S-curves meeting at claw feet, a spiral-reeded stem with leaf ornament and a ring handle framed in a Rococo cartouche. All four original glass vessels are present and whole with their stoppers, and the metalwork carries its dark original patina throughout.

The ménagère stood at the centre of the Belle Époque table, holding oil, vinegar, salt and condiments within reach of everyone seated. Complete examples are genuinely uncommon — the glass is the first element to disappear over a century of use, and a stand that has kept all four is the exception rather than the rule.

It has real presence on a dresser or a sideboard, and the glass catches the light from every side.
