The Gustavian Cream & Sugar Set – Hallbergs GAB

An antique Swedish cream and sugar set in silver plate by Hallbergs GAB of Stockholm, made around 1900 to 1910 in the Gustavian revival taste, with draped flower garlands, beaded medallions, vertical fluting and acanthus-clad feet. The sugar bowl opens to a gilded interior, warm and wholly intact. The plate is well preserved across both pieces with every passage of relief still crisp, and neither the handles nor the feet show damage.

Hallbergs Guldsmedsaktiebolaget was founded in Stockholm in 1860 by Carl Gustaf Hallberg and became Sweden's most prestigious silver house, holding the royal warrant for generations. The Gustavian revival looked back to the neoclassical court style of the late eighteenth century, and it is that restraint — garlands and fluting rather than flourish — that gives the pair their quiet formality.

The two read beautifully together on a dresser or a tray, and the gilding catches what light there is.
