Antique French yellow glazed oval terrine with lid

The Provençal Terrine

€195,00
SKU — KW28

An antique French terrine from Provence, nineteenth century, in earthenware dressed in a warm yellow-ochre glaze. The generous oval body has two sturdy lug handles and a band of overlapping arches in relief, repeated around the domed lid beneath its round knop. The glaze pools deeper amber in the hollows and has worn thin along the rims, with small glaze losses that speak of long use.

Glazed earthenware like this was the everyday ware of the Provençal kitchen, made in the potteries of the south of France for slow-cooked dishes carried from hearth to table.

On a farmhouse table or a dresser shelf, perhaps filled with pine cones or dried lavender, it is a wonderfully sculptural piece. Decorative use recommended.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
Approx. 5⅞" high x 9½" wide x 15⅜" long
