The Savannah Bowl
A footed café au lait bowl of the early twentieth century, printed in brown transferware with a band of savannah animals running right around the body — antelope, hyena, warthog and panther moving through grass and trees, with a small creature printed in the well. Animal subjects are the exception on French breakfast ware, where flowers were the rule, and this one is unusually complete and crisply printed. Heavy crazing runs through the cream glaze with an even staining settled into it, and the bowl is otherwise without chips or cracks.
The café au lait bowl was the French breakfast vessel: coffee and milk were drunk from a bowl rather than a cup. Found in Bruges.
It holds small things on a shelf, turned so the animals show.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
