The Papaver Footed Bowl – Rörstrand
A low oval footed bowl in Swedish flintgods, made by Rörstrand in Stockholm around the turn of the century and printed in a soft grey-green monochrome transfer named Papaver — the poppy.
The moulded body carries a waved rim, leaf-scroll handles and a shaped foot ring, and the underside is marked three times over: the printed pattern cartouche, the crowned Rörstrand signature and the impressed model name PERL Papaver. Fine even crazing runs right through the glaze, with a few pale amber marks in the well, the soft settled surface that hundred-year-old earthenware of this kind comes into.
Rörstrand was founded in 1726 and is Sweden's oldest ceramic works. Perl was one of its long-lived flintgods models, and the naturalistic poppy of the Papaver print belongs to the flower language of the factory's most celebrated years around 1900.
The low, broad shape makes it a natural planter for bulbs — hyacinths, tulips, a cushion of moss — or a wide, low centrepiece on a table.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
