The Anna Pedestal Bowl

An antique Swedish footed bowl in the Anna pattern, printed in deep blue-green on flintware and twice marked for Göteborg, in transfer and impressed into the clay, dating from around 1900 to 1920. The urn-shaped body rises from a flaring foot and carries two scrolled handles finished by hand with painted dot rows and leaf scales, with four bouquets circling the body and pearl, festoon and wave borders running the rim, the interior and the foot. There is no chipping and no loss anywhere; an even amber crazing covers the whole piece instead, warmest along the rim and in the well, which is exactly the timeworn surface this form wears best.

Anna was Göteborgs Porslinsfabrik's own pattern and its great success, printed here under the factory's mark before Rörstrand took over the moulds and the design became known in Sweden as Grön Anna.

The handles and the pedestal give it real presence — a centre piece for a dresser, a table or an open shelf, holding dried stems or left as it is.
