The Belgian Palmette Board

One of four identical white faience boards, Belgian or northern French and dating from around 1900 to 1940, pressed from a single mould with a fluted frame, fan-filled corners and a leaf palmette around the hanging hole. The glaze is clear and no factory mark appears anywhere on the backs. Even glaze wear, light crazing and a soft warmth in the white run across all four, giving them the honest surface of genuine antique kitchen ware; one of the four carries a small chip to the unglazed reverse at the lower edge, out of sight once the board hangs, and is offered here at its own price.

Small glazed boards like these hung on a hook in Belgian and northern French kitchens, and the same fluted frame appears on the boards made by the Hainaut faïence works from the 1890s onward. Four from one mould, in one place, is unusual.

Hung in a row on a wall, four of them make a quiet, graphic composition.

One has a small chip on back and is lowered in price.
