The Aéroplane Bowl
A Belgian footed bowl by Boch Frères of La Louvière, of the pioneer aviation years around 1910 to 1920, printed in green transferware in the pattern named Aéroplane. The name is literal: monoplanes with propellers and goggled pilots fly right around the body, past a crescent moon with a face, from the years when flight had just arrived and found its way onto ordinary things. A hairline runs in the body and there is old wear to the rim, both sympathetic to a piece that spent its life on a breakfast table.
The base is marked clearly with the factory name, the town and the pattern — Boch Frères worked at La Louvière from 1841 and named its printed patterns freely. Found in Bruges.
It sits well among plain cream ware, where the green print and the aircraft show.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
