The Three Salt-Glazed Jugs

THIS LISTING IS FOR THE SET OF THREE JUGS.

Three small salt-glazed stoneware jugs, twentieth century, from the Westerwald potteries of the Rhineland where this grey and cobalt ware has been made since the seventeenth century. Each is drawn up into a pinched pouring lip above a full loop handle, the body covered in the fine dotted relief and orange-peel surface that salt firing gives, banded in cobalt at the collar and foot with a brushed cobalt leaf running around the belly. None has chips or cracks; one carries a deeper staining and crazing at the collar that gives it the most character of the three.

Salt glaze is made by throwing salt into the kiln at around 1250 degrees, where it vitrifies the surface without any glaze being applied. The bases are unmarked. Found on the German side of the border near Alsace.

Three together make a grouping rather than an object, and they take field flowers, kitchen tools or nothing at all.
