The Copper Lustre Bowl

SKU — TB118

A large footed bowl, likely Belgian and dating from the early twentieth century, glazed all over in a copper lustre that shifts between gold, rust and grey-gold as the light moves across it. A printed border of rosettes, stars and leaves runs around the rim, and a small printed medallion sits in the well. Heavy crazing covers the surface with deep staining settled into it, and two hairlines run in the body without compromising its solidity — the bowl stands firm and sits level.

Bowls of this size sit between the individual café au lait bowl and the large saladier: the French called them jatte or grand bol, and they held compote, milk or fromage blanc at the table. Found in Bruges.

It reads beautifully on open shelving, and takes a generous armful of hydrangea.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.

Approx. 4¼" high x 7" diameter
