The Pair of Maille Mustard Pots

A pair of French stoneware mustard pots from the house of Maille in Paris, twentieth century, printed around the body with the old shop text — seul Vinaigrier du Roy, the royal warrant of 27 August 1769, and the Paris address. The base of each is marked MAILLE 1747 with MODÈLE DÉPOSÉ and the capacity, 12/13 cl. One is glazed in a warm ochre yellow, the other left plain cream, and the difference between them is the point: they read as a pair with two lives rather than a matching set. Both are printed crisply and neither has chips or cracks.

Antoine-Claude Maille opened his shop on the rue Saint-André-des-Arts in 1747 and the house still makes mustard today. Pots like these were the packaging; when the pot was empty it stayed in the kitchen. Found at a market in Amiens.

They hold pencils, brushes or a few field flowers, and make a small still life on a shelf.
