The French Peonies

A French flower still life in oil, painted around the middle of the twentieth century and signed Jacqs Viot in the lower right. Two peonies — one open and carmine-flushed, one tighter and rose-pink — stand in a plain white cylinder vase on a soft pink table against a pale yellow-green ground. The paint lies thin and dry across the ground and builds up in short rounded strokes in the flowers. Small nicks and losses to the grey-green outer moulding are the only wear; the painted surface is untouched and the frame is firm in its corners.

The flattened ground, the shadowless table plane and the hard cast shadow belong to French decorative easel painting of the post-war decades. A framer's label on the reverse reads Art-Encadrements, Christian Meichler, 50 rue des Franciscains, Mulhouse, placing the piece in Alsace.

Small and close to square, it sits well in a gallery wall of other small frames, or leaned on a chest of drawers.
