The Springtime Jug
An English jug with a fluted body and shaped spout, printed in green with roses and trailing flowers, dating from the nineteen fifties or sixties. Printed to the base beneath a rose vignette: SPRINGTIME, W.H. GRINDLEY & CO LTD, STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND. The upper body and neck carry an even warm staining that has settled in with use, deepening the cream ground so the green reads softer than when it left the pottery.
W.H. Grindley of Tunstall was among the great Staffordshire exporters of printed tableware, and Springtime is one of its most widely loved post-war patterns. Green transfer is markedly less common than blue.
Beautifully placed on a laid table or a dresser shelf, and generous enough for garden roses.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
