The Watteau Jug
The Watteau Jug
An octagonal English ironstone jug printed in soft red with the Watteau pattern — a wooded landscape with figures in eighteenth-century dress — dating from the middle decades of the twentieth century. Printed to the base beneath a crown: MASON'S, PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA, Watteau, ENGLAND. A fine even crazing runs over the whole body and a deep warm staining has gathered around the rim and neck, which is precisely what gives a printed jug of this kind its depth.
Mason's patented its ironstone in 1813 and the name has stood among the best known in English pottery ever since; Watteau belongs to the twentieth-century pattern books. Red transfer is far scarcer than blue.
Handsome on a dresser or a laid table, where the red warms a room of white and cream.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
Approx. overall 6" high x 7" wide x 4" deep
Approx. overall 15cm high x 18cm wide x 10cm deep
