The Antique French Ribbon Tureen

A French provincial tureen bowl in creamy white faience, dating from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, its rounded body raised on a turned pedestal foot and set with a pair of sculptural handles modelled as tied ribbon bows. The glaze has settled into fine overall crazing with a warm honey tone gathered along the rim and foot. A stable vertical line runs down from the rim on one side, clearly visible in the photographs and sympathetic to the piece's long working life, leaving it solid and square on its foot.

Footed tureens of this form were a fixture of the French provincial table from the middle of the nineteenth century, turned out in quantity by the faïenceries of the north and east as plain everyday ware rather than display porcelain. Their generous scale and undecorated surfaces are exactly what makes them sought after now.

It reads beautifully on open shelving, a kitchen dresser or a farmhouse table, and takes an armful of dried stems or hydrangeas with ease.
