An antique French soup tureen from the Faïencerie de Longchamp in the Côte-d'Or, dating from around 1880 to 1912 and complete with its original lid.

The body is terre de fer, a hard white earthenware, raised on a gathered foot with two ribbon-loop handles and a matching finial, each brushed with a small floral sprig. Every side carries its own blue-grey transfer scene — fishing boats under sail, two-masted ships, chalk cliffs and a harbour wall — with a further scene across the lid. A minimal nick to the rim and a stable line in one handle do not compromise its solidity.

Longchamp turned to fine white earthenware after the 1878 exposition, and under Robert Charbonnier each model was given its own pictorial estampille: a rowing boat, a banderole reading LONGCHAMP and an interlaced RC monogram set in the sail, printed beneath the foot.

It carries a dresser or a hall table on its own, and holds dried stems well with the lid set aside.
