The Pornic Saladier

A large French saladier sur pied in terre de fer, printed with the Pornic pattern in a soft sage green and marked H.B. & Cie for the Faïencerie de Choisy-le-Roi, dating from around 1880 to 1910. The deep bowl sits on a tall turned foot with a beaded edge, and the transfer covers the interior, the outside and the foot band alike — wild roses, carnations and trailing ivy set in dotted rocaille scrolls. It is unusually clean for its age: undamaged and complete, with only a few small brown flecks in the well that read as the iron spotting of old earthenware.

The saladier sur pied belonged to the French table, raised on its foot so it stood clear of the rest of the setting. Choisy-le-Roi named its patterns after French towns; Pornic sits on the Breton coast.

The sage green is rarer than the usual blue and lands squarely in the French farmhouse palette — on a dresser, an open shelf, or alone in a cabinet.
