The Gien Hummingbird Jug
The Gien Hummingbird Jug
A low, wide French faience jug from the Faïencerie de Gien, printed in slate blue-grey on cream. Trumpet flowers on one side, a hummingbird in flight on the other, a hand-painted bamboo border at the rim and a handle modelled as a length of bamboo.
The squat shape is the point: a broad belly and a wide lip hold a short, heavy bouquet far better than a tall slim pitcher.
Faïencerie de Gien, Loiret, marked underneath with the printed blue Médailles d’Or mark. Antique, c. 1880–1910 — French Japonisme. Fine faience, not porcelain.
Condition: good. There is a tiny hairline in the base — it reads as part of the crazing at first glance, but a fingernail catches it. I´ve tested the jug with water and it held with no seeping.
No chips and no restoration otherwise. Fine even crazing across the glaze.
Measurements: H 13.5 cm, diameter 20 cm, 25 cm spout to handle / H 5.3 in, diameter 7.9 in, 9.8 in spout to handle.
