The Colomba Jug
A large French washstand jug by Utzschneider & Cie of Sarreguemines, made before 1918 and printed in the Colomba pattern — birds among branches and arabesques, laid in soft rose-red on cream faience fine. The whole surface carries a fine, even crazing that has warmed with age, and there is a small old repair to the upper rim and a minor early nick, both sympathetic to a piece that has been in use for well over a century.
Jugs of this scale belonged to a washstand set, standing on the bedroom commode beside its basin in the years before running water. Sarreguemines named its patterns in a cartouche on the base, and Colomba is printed there clearly beneath the U & C mark. Found in the town of Sarreguemines itself.
It holds branches and dried flowers beautifully, or simply stands on its own on a dresser.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
