The Swedish Pheasant Tureen

An antique Swedish soup tureen in brown transferware and classic pheasant pattern, dated in stamp 1899 and complete with its original lid. The round body sits on a tall trumpet foot, with two scroll handles ending in pierced rosettes and a matching pierced finial, picked out in brown by hand. 

Pheasants stand among full peony blooms and trailing prunus, with a fine diaper border at the rim, the lid and the foot. The glaze carries a deep all-over craquelure that has taken up colour with the years and reads warm ivory rather than white. Fine lines run from the rim beside one handle and from below the other toward the foot, clearly visible and sympathetic to its timeworn character.

Flintgods, the Swedish name for fine white earthenware, was printed with bird-and-peony patterns from the 1860s onward — a Scandinavian answer to the English pheasant services.

It has the scale to hold an open shelf or the centre of a table on its own.
