The Anna Covered Tureen

An antique Swedish covered tureen in the Anna pattern with the rare staple repair. Printed in teal transfer on cream earthenware by Göteborgs Porslinsfabrik, c.1900–1920. The form is the low, wide oval — a broad body on a wave-cut foot with two sculpted branch handles, and a domed lid with a matching branch finial. 

Fine crazing covers the piece and has drawn a warm honey tone into the interior, four old metal staples sit in pairs across the finial from a long-ago repair that has held the branch true, and a shallow loss in the wave-cut lid rim was made before glazing, as the photographs show.

Anna was the factory's own pattern and its great success, drawn in rococo revival cartouches with bouquets falling in loose garlands. The covered tureen was the piece carried in whole and set down at the centre of a Swedish table.

At 32 cm handle to handle it holds a room, and the lid makes it a place to keep keys and small things on a dresser.
