The Asparagus Service
The Asparagus Service
A two-piece French majolica asparagus service, hand-painted and moulded in trompe-l'œil as a tied bundle of asparagus — green spears with soft pink tips, bound with a raffia bow. The set pairs a flat serving platter with a raised draining cradle (égouttoir) that stands on little ball feet, its pierced holes letting the spears drain above the platter.
Maker: unmarked, France.
Era: vintage, early-to-mid 20th century.
Material: glazed faience / majolica, hand-painted with relief modelling.
Condition: excellent — clean, bright glaze with no notable wear.
Measurements (overall): H 8 × W 18 × L 31 cm — H 3.1 × W 7.1 × L 12.2 in.
A characterful piece for serving asparagus, or simply as a sculptural element on a gathered table.
