The White Washstand Jug

A Swedish washstand jug in white earthenware, dating from the early twentieth century, round bodied with a wide wavy lip and a high strap handle. The glaze has gone the colour of old paper toward the rim and neck, an even warm softening that only comes with long standing. There is a stable hairline where the handle meets the body, which does not affect the jug's solidity. A faint impressed number to the base is a mould mark rather than a maker's.

Before running water reached Swedish houses, a jug of this form stood on the washstand in every bedroom with its basin beside it.

Handsome with a generous armful of branches, or standing alone on a chest.
